A Glimpse of Africa Festival
On August 15–16, 2026, Calder Plaza hosts A Glimpse of Africa Festival, the largest African cultural festival in West Michigan. The event is free and runs from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM both days. According to the festival listing, attendees can explore fashion shows, art exhibitions, African food, dance performances, live music, poetry, crafts and interactive activities for all ages. The festival aims to showcase the diversity of Africa and create a family‑friendly celebration of culture. Breakaway Music Festival
Electronic‑music fans will flock to Belknap Park on August 14–15, 2026 for Breakaway Music Festival. The Michigan edition’s lineup includes artists such as Fisher, Big Gigantic, Subtronics, NGHTMRE, Two Friends (Bass Set), Wuki and many others. Expect multiple stages, LED visuals and food vendors. Grab a ride‑share or bus from The BlueJay and dance the weekend away.
Dożynki Polish Harvest Festival
End the month by celebrating Polish heritage at Dożynki Polish Harvest Festival. Hosted downtown on the last full weekend of August (August 28–30, 2026), Dożynki is a free three‑day celebration of Polish food, music and culture. The Polish Heritage Society notes that the festival features live polka and contemporary bands, dancing, and some of the best Polish food in the region. A schedule of events for 2026 shows traditional and modern polka bands performing across all three days, plus children’s tents and demonstrations of Polish cooking and pysanki egg decorating. Bring cash for pierogi, kielbasa and pastry delights!
Other late‑summer activities
Late August is also prime time to explore nearby Lake Michigan beaches.
